Ms. Melva Jean Brown-Halton, affectionately known as “Red,” was born on June 15, 1958, to the late Johnie B. Halton and the late Louvenia Bryant in Chicago, Illinois. She was one of six children: Sylvia Brown, Everda Brown, Linnie Halton, Corine Jacobs, and the late Lela Halton.
Melva worked various jobs throughout her life, always dedicated and hardworking. She eventually found her true calling as a DSP/Home Care Aide, a role in which she faithfully served for over 25 years. That’s who Melva Brown was - a caring, passionate, hardworking woman who would give you the shirt off her back. She carried a real, unconditional love and showed unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Melva loved cooking big Sunday dinners, hosting family gatherings, playing cards, laughing, and enjoying life. She was so loved in her community that many affectionately called her “Mom.” And one thing everyone knew about Melva was this: do not mess with her father, the late Johnie Halton.
She did not play about him—that was just about the only time you’d ever see a frown on her face.
Melva and the late Leon Cooper were blessed with four children: Tyrone Halton, Lafra Halton, Melissa Brown, and Lakieta Halton.
Melva was a remarkable woman—one of the best people you could ever meet. She received her wings on November 26, 2025. She is preceded in death by her father, Johnie Halton, and her son, Lafra Halton.
Melva leaves to cherish her memory: Her children, Tyrone Halton, Melissa Brown, Lakieta Halton; her special son, Everett Brown; special family friend, Dorothy Knighten (Re-Re); all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren (with one on the way); her siblings, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Her love, her strength, and her presence will be forever missed.
