Masco Stone Jr., was born on February 15, 1928 in Selma, AL to the late Masco Stone Sr. and Leola Stone. He was the third child of five siblings. His brother Ernest and sister Elizabeth preceded him in death.
Masco confessed his faith in Christ at an early age at Wesley C.M.E. Church. He was a product of the Selma Public School system and attended Lowens County Training School and graduated. In the early years after graduation, he worked as a farmer, but the courageous spirit he possessed, he followed in the footsteps of his brother and relocated to Chicago, IL. He came to Chicago in October 1952.
Masco is survived by his wife Susie, whom he had been with for 43 years and married for thirty of those years. Together, they created a blended family of seven children: Ruby, Curtis, Donald, Nichele, Nolan, Lolita, and Tim.
Masco went on to have an accomplished career as a carpenter. In 1956, he became a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, employed by other companies, which enabled him to master the craft of building and remodeling homes. After many years of working for different companies, Masco became an entrepreneur and started his own business, Stone Construction Company.
Over the years, Masco’s clientele grew to many devoted customers who appreciated his ability to accomplish the work/ remodeling that someone needed. In 2002 it was the last significant construction job he did building Twelve Gates M.B. Church. The building was originally a grocery/liquor store and with Pastor Anthony Randall’s vision and Masco’s expertise, it became a church, a beautiful sanctuary.
Though Masco spent his early years working as a farmer, his passion for cultivating the earth never left him. In his later years, he found immense joy tending to his backyard garden in Chicago, where he grew abundant fresh produce. With the same patience and dedication that defined his work as a carpenter, he nurtured his plants, sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, and neighbors. His garden was not just a source of nourishment but a testament to his nature and the simple joys of life.
He loved to travel; his favorite trip was going to Hawaii. Masco would accompany his wife on various NAR national conventions and attend some social events. After retiring, fishing became his favorite hobby, especially when he had a good catch early in the morning. He also loved to do jigsaw puzzles. Masco was always happy when he completed a puzzle; he took a picture and sent a copy to his family. Watching YouTube on his computer was another pastime, as he was looking at different things online. Masco was an excellent cook, especially baking cakes and pies. Holidays were a treat for him and he would always start planning what would be on the menu early.
Masco leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memory: His beloved wife, Susie, seven children, ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters, Elise Mae Anderson of Jamestown, NC and Hattie Pettway of Whistler, AL, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
