Mary Martine Newsome

September 13, 1952 — May 3, 2026

Mary Martine Newsome, affectionately known as “Tina” or “Tinie,” was born on September 13, 1952, in Chicago to her loving parents, Ola Mae Newsome and S.T. Newsome. Tina was the fourth of seven children and shared a close bond with her siblings: Lynn Newsome, Bobby Newsome, Ronnie Newsome, Randall Newsome, Alton Newsome, and Augustine Newsome. She spent most of her life on the west side of Chicago, where she attended John Marshall High School, was a cheerleader, and created lifelong friendships and cherished memories.

During her youth, she met her soulmate of 37 years, Darryl Stingley, Sr., with whom she shared a deep and enduring bond. From this union, she bore two sons, Darryl Stingley, Jr. and Derek Stingley, and was blessed with a bonus son, John Smith. Tina dedicated part of her professional life to working at Morton Salt Company, where she was known for her strong work ethic and commitment.

Tina was a truly remarkable woman worth her weight in gold and a survivor in more ways than one. She possessed a radiant spirit, an inner and outer beauty that touched everyone she encountered. Her sense of humor was unmatched, often filling any room with joy and uncontrollable laughter. A natural caregiver and true humanitarian, she embodied the spirit of a Florence Nightingale, always nurturing, always giving, always expressing her love for her family. Selfless to her core, Tina gave freely of herself to her family, friends, and anyone in need.

Tina is preceded in death by: Her parents, Ola Mae Newsome and S.T. Newsome; and her siblings, Ronnie Newsome, Augustine Newsome, Bobby Newsome, Randall Newsome, Alton Newsome, and Lynn Newsome.

Tina’s legacy of love, strength, compassion, and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a host of family and lifelong friends to cherish her loving memory, including: Her sons, Darryl Stingley, Jr. (Elisa), Derek Stingley (Natasha), and John Smith; her beloved grandchildren, Darryl Strickland, Dontae Strickland, Deon Strickland, Nahjha Shanks, Isis Stingley, Reyna Smith, Gianna Smith, Derek Stingley, Jr., Sanaa Stingley, and Jacoby Smith; her five great-grandchildren: Darinise Strickland, Darielle Strickland, LeCorey Jordan, Janiya Strickland and Derek Stingley III; her life-long friend and Sister-in-“love”, Flozell Newsome, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved her dearly.
