Joyce Ann Harris was born on April 30, 1961, in Lambert, Mississippi, to the late Janie Ruth Harris and Nelson Harris Jr. During her early years, her mother relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, where Joyce spent the majority of her childhood. At the age of 14, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, to live with her late aunt, Callie Watson. While residing in Chicago, Joyce attended Orr High School.
Joyce had many passions, and her unwavering love for Christ was among the most significant. She accepted Christ at a young age and carried her faith with her throughout her life.
Joyce was vibrant, full of life, and deeply devoted to her family and friends. One of her greatest joys was cooking - a true expression of her love and care. If Joyce prepared a meal for you, it was because she genuinely cared about you. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, laughter, and connection.
She also had a heart for service and spent many years working as a caregiver, both professionally and personally. Whether for clients, friends, or family, Joyce found true fulfillment in caring for others. It was more than just a job to her - it was a calling.
Known for her bold spirit and honesty, Joyce never hesitated to “tell it like it is.” She had little tolerance for nonsense and held herself and those around her to a high standard. Her straightforward nature, combined with her compassion and humor, made her unforgettable to all who knew her.
Joyce peacefully departed this life on Sunday, October 12, 2025. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Andrea Harris; her devoted parents, Janie Ruth and Nelson Jr.; her brother, Nelson III; and her sister, Vearlean.
She leaves to cherish her memory: Three beloved daughters, Takisha, LaShonda, and LaRhonda (Calvin); one son, Jimmie Jr.; and seven honorary children.
She is also survived by: Two loving sisters, Geretha (Carlos) and Mildred; and nine brothers, Willie, Troy (Karen), Anthony, Odell, Nolan, Comal, Alvin, Calvin, and Danny.
Her legacy continues through ten cherished grandchildren, Chaquita, Alexus, Amarion, Alex, Taylor, Centail, Andrea, Gavin, Mariyah, and McKynzie; one precious great-grandchild, Legacy; and seventeen honorary grandchildren.
She also leaves her favorite cousin and sister at heart, Patricia (Harold); two special friends, Neal and Tommie; and a host of other relatives and friends who loved her deeply.
