Born October 23, 1951, in the same city ,Chicago, he called home throughout his life. Jimmy left an indelible mark on all who knew him
Walker was a proud graduate and talented Varsity letterman football player of John Marshall Metro High School. James was also a Marshall’s Hall of Fame inductee (2018) was deeply connected to the school’s legacy. As a member of the Marshall High School Alumni Association, he celebrated the institution’s influence. When he was a teen he participated and was a member of a program called Young Life. It was there that many - including Jimmy - began to explore their passions and develop the life skills that would guide them into adulthood.
Following high school, Jimmy served honorably in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that would remain with him throughout his life.
After completing his service, Jimmy embarked on a long and dedicated career with Illinois Bell/Ameritech Telephone Company - now known today as AT&T. His work ethic and reliability made him a valued member of the organization during a time of great technological change and growth.
Jimmy was known for his charismatic personality - a natural leader whose presence could light up any room. He had an uncanny ability to connect with people from all walks of life and influence those around him with sincerity and strength. His mentorship was sought after by many; though his advice could be served with an appetizer of care and a full course meal of bluntness but he would sweeten the meal with a dessert of jokes, it was always rooted in truth and love. Those who turned to him for guidance often found clarity and direction through his words.
He found joy in talking sports, life, and cherished moments spent in fellowship with friends. One of the most, meaningful expressions of this fellowship came through his involvement with the GoodFellas - a close-knit group of African American men committed to maintaining strong bonds through regular gatherings and outings. For Jimmy, the GoodFellas were more than friends - they were family. Their shared experiences created a brotherhood grounded in mutual respect, support, and love.
Jimmy’s legacy lives on through his children: Sons, Jamal Walker and Andre Walker; daughter, Jetta Walker; grandson, Daiquon Walker; brothers, Eric, Byron and Eric; and a heaping of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by: His father, Ananias Walker; mother, Marion Harris-Walker; sisters, Rachel, Karen and Rita; brothers, Robert, Edward and Ralph.
