George L. Lawson

April 23, 1938 — June 3, 2026

On a hill far away in Bastrop, Louisiana, on April 23, 1938, God blessed Shelby and Lucille Lawson with a hard-working, strong, and loving angel named George Lawson. George was one of twelve children and was deeply rooted in a large and loving family. His maternal grandparents were Ola and Enoch Rogers. He was preceded in death by seven siblings who now await him in heaven.

George leaves behind loving siblings, including Audrey Harfield of California, Hazel Jackson of California, and Sylvester (Fannie) Lawson of Bastrop, Louisiana.

George was educated in Louisiana and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age.

Later in life, George moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he married Christine Pate in 1959. Through this union, their son, Gregory, was born. The marriage ended in divorce in 1960. On October 3, 1960, George married the love of his life, Eloise Dixon. Through this union, they were blessed with Sharon (James), Darryl (Wilma), and Michael(Sharee). George also lovingly embraced Gordon and Geronne as sons.

George proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1962 until his honorable discharge in 1964.

He dedicated many years of service working at Midwest Lamp Parts until retirement. George was gifted with his hands, and his craftsmanship could be seen in restaurants, homes, and even films such as The Gambler and The Untouchables. He was known by many as a man with the “Gift of Love.”

A faithful man of God, George was a longtime member of Emmaus Lutheran Church, where he served as President of the Men’s Group and as a Sunday School teacher. He later became an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.

George believed deeply in serving his community. He was actively involved with SACCC (South Austin Coalition Community Council), where he served as Housing Chairman. He spent many years traveling to Washington, D.C., advocating for equal housing opportunities.

His love of politics and desire to help the community led him to run for the Alderman seat in Chicago’s 37th Ward. Although he was not elected, his passion for serving and helping the community continued.

George also devoted many years of service as a Cub Scout leader and coached baseball at Columbus Park, where his team, the “Red Leg,” became well known.

George had a passion for gardening and was a proud member of the Green Team gardening club. He especially loved growing greens, peppers, and tomatoes, and many admired the fruits of his labor.

On June 3, 2026, George Lawson peacefully departed this life due to health complications.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his devoted wife, Eloise “Peaches” Lawson; his children, Gregory, Sharon (James), Darryl (Wilma), and Michael (Sharee); the sons he embraced with love, Gordon (Burnett) and Geronne(Laquita); and his beloved brother-in-law, Grady Broadnex (Gemma).

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Edric, Erica, Bianca, Timothy Hess, Michael, Aidan, Amare, Jelani, Azuri, Amauri (Luca), Erika, Alicia, and Jonathan; and his cherished great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Asya, Kendall, Kenderick, Ayden, Armando, and Angese.

George also leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

“Well done, thy good and faithful servant
